Chapter Members Participate in Area Show: Smith Mountain Lake - September 10, 2016

This was the ACBS Smith Mountain Lake Chapter's 26th show.  They had the largest number of boats ever--62.  The day of the show, Saturday September 10th, was hot and sunny.  The iconic Miss America IX (1930 Gar Wood) made an appearance.  It was thrilling to see this piece of history racing on the lake.  Woody Boater's Matt Smith's latest addition to his stable of boats--a
1937 16' Chris Craft special race boat--a barrel back that he launched for the first time at the show.  RDU club members Alan and Judy Hills assisted with the launch of Matt's barrel back.  Several photos taken of the boat were on the Woody Boater website the next day. http://www.woodyboater.com They also helped Matt photograph a Century Sabre gull-wing.

Other RDU members seen at the show include:  Jeff Gelm and his family--brought Sweet Pea; Treasurer Bob Banta (also a member of the SML Chapter) brought his Chris Craft Continental (no name yet); Vice-President Jim Alexander and his grandson Henry; and John Justice.

At the evening awards dinner the owner of Miss America IX presented a program with old photos and news filmstrips of the history of the boat.  It was truly a wonderful story of the 40+ year stewardship of the boat by Charles Mistle and his family.   At the dinner, Alan Hill's 1957 Chris Craft Sea Skiff "Li'l Rascal" won the "Best Lapstrake" award.

Our 2016 11th Annual show at New Bern was a great success with overcast weather which didn't bother us at all. We are grateful for the show participants who came some distance to display and run their boats. Special appreciation goes to the  many owners of Barbour boats made right in New Bern who brought so many fine examples of this wonderful boat to our show.
